UK considers new Russia sanctions after Navalny frog toxin finding

The UK is mulling fresh sanctions against Moscow after pinning blame on the Kremlin for the poisoning of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Yvette Cooper has suggested. The Foreign Office and four of the UK’s allies – Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands – announced on Saturday they had determined that Navalny’s death was most likely the result of poisoning using dart frog toxin arranged by the Russian state. The Russian embassy in London has denied Moscow was involved in Navalny’s death two years ago in a Siberian penal colony and described the announcement as illustrating the “feeblemindedness of western fabulists”.In a rebuke on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme, Cooper, the foreign secretary, said the accusation against Russia was “deeply serious” and a product of two years of evidence gathering. She said: “Only the Russian regime had the means, the motive and the opportunity to administer this poison while he was in a Russian prison.

”Analysis of samples from Navalny’s body revealed the presence of a toxin called epibatidine, which is produced by dart frogs in South America. The UK and its allies said Navalny could not have ingested the poison accidentally as it is not found in Russia and is generally produced only by the frogs in the wild. The five European countries have reported the Kremlin to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons after accusing Moscow of breaching its conventions.Cooper said the incident showed that “the cold war peace dividend we all believed in and hoped for has gone, and we need to be ready for Russian aggression continuing towards Europe”.She suggested further sanctions could follow.

“We continue to look at coordinated action, including increasing sanctions on the Russian regime. As you know, we have been pursuing this as part of our response to the brutal invasion of Ukraine, where we are also coming up to the fourth anniversary of that invasion as well.“We believe that it is the partnerships that we build abroad that make us stronger at home.It is by acting alongside our European allies, alongside allies across the world, that we do maintain that pressure on the Russian regime.”Noting that the government would continue to provide military support to Ukraine and remain vigilant towards other different, hybrid threats, Cooper added: “The other thing that I would say, specifically about Alexei Navalny, is one of the things he said was ‘tell the truth, spread the truth’, because that is the most dangerous weapon of all.

”The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, said on Sunday that Washington had no reason to question the “troubling” conclusions of the five European allies.“We obviously are aware of the report. It’s a troubling report. We’re aware of that case of Mr Navalny and certainly … we don’t have any reason to question it,” Rubio told reporters at a news conference in Bratislava during a visit to Slovakia. When asked why the US had not joined the five countries in making a statement on their findings, Rubio said this was an endeavour by them.

“Those countries came to that conclusion,They coordinated that,[It] doesn’t mean we disagree with the outcome,We just, it wasn’t our endeavour,Sometimes countries go out and do their thing based on the intelligence they’ve gathered.

”He added: “We’re not disputing or getting into a fight with these countries over it.But it was their report, and they put that out there.”The UK’s shadow foreign secretary, Priti Patel, warned of an “axis of authoritarianism” comprising Russia, China, North Korea and Iran faced by the UK and other western nations.Speaking on Sky News’s Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips programme in advance of making a speech at the Munich Security Conference, the senior Conservative said the US remained a “natural ally” and partner for European powers.A statement from the Russian embassy in London denied any involvement in Navalny’s death.

It said: “There is no reason whatsoever to credit such ‘findings’ by western ‘experts’.As with the Skripal case, there are strident accusations, media hysteria, zero evidence, and a host of questions the accusers would rather ignore. So what was it in the end – poison derived from the skin of a South American frog or novichok?“We have become accustomed to the feeblemindedness of western fabulists. One must ask what kind of person would believe this nonsense about a frog.Yet what truly shocks is the method now favoured by western politicians – necro-propaganda.

This is not a quest for justice but a mockery of the dead,Even after the death of the Russian citizen, London and the European capitals cannot allow him to rest in peace – a fact that speaks volumes about those who instigated this campaign,”

Femke Kok dominates 500m speed skating to end Jackson’s hopes of retaining Olympic title

Speed skater Femke Kok had admitted that anything but gold in her signature 500m race would be a disappointment after opening her Olympic account last Monday with silver in a Dutch one-two alongside Jutta Leerdam in the 1000m. On Sunday evening, she performed like an athlete insistent on leaving no room for doubt.Kok leveraged two years of total sprint dominance into the first Olympic gold medal of her career. She blew away the field in the women’s 500m in an Olympic-record time of 36.49sec with the kind of controlled, furious circuit that has made her a three-time world champion at the distance at 25 years old

Jeremiah Azu completes surprise sprint double at UK indoor championships

Amid a raft of high-profile absentees from Birmingham this weekend it was quite the surprise to see Jeremiah Azu’s name on the 200m start list for the UK Athletics Indoor Championships on Sunday. The 200m is not contested internationally during the indoor season so elite athletes almost never race it, and Azu had already won the 60m title a day earlier. In an era where world-class athletes tend to wrap themselves in cotton wool for fear of injury it was unusual to see one so accomplished run an additional three times in three hours when there was no particular need. That Azu triumphed – in a personal best of 20.77sec – came as little surprise given his accolades include world and European 60m gold medals

England’s attacking options narrow with Arundell facing ban for crunch Ireland game

Steve Borthwick is set for a major selection headache as England seek to get their Six Nations campaign back on track against Ireland on Saturday with Henry Arundell facing a suspension after his red card against Scotland.England have promised an “honest and emotional” review into their dismal Calcutta Cup defeat before Borthwick contemplates team changes to face Ireland and he is likely to be without Arundell after tournament organisers confirmed he will face a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday. Arundell’s first yellow was shown for not releasing after a covering tackle on Rory Darge, the second for taking out Kyle Steyn in the air.Borthwick’s wing options are already depleted with Immanuel Feyi-Waboso nursing a hamstring injury, and Arundell’s expected unavailability would leave the head coach without any express pace for the visit of Andy Farrell’s side. Elliot Daly is in the wider squad but has been out of form this season while Cadan Murley, who endured a torrid debut against Ireland 12 months ago, is another option

Théo Attissogbe leads imperious France to eight-try romp over sorry Wales

We are running out of ways to describe this. Another match in what used to be rugby’s most passionate cauldron, another dismantling, another humiliation.France are good, really good, but we might as well have been in Paris, so loud was the travelling support, so gaping the rows of empty seats. The official attendance was just shy of 60,000. Maybe, but it looked and felt a good deal less than that
