Harry Brook reiterates support for Brendon McCullum after England’s World Cup exit

Harry Brook called on the England and Wales Cricket Board to back Brendon McCullum as all-format coach after England brought their winter to a close with defeat by India in a wild T20 World Cup semi-final that became, by a margin of 45 runs, the highest-scoring game in the competition’s history.Though his position has been the subject of speculation since England’s sorry performance in the Ashes McCullum said after his side’s seven-run loss in Mumbai he would “love to carry on” and Brook that the New Zealander remained “125%” the right man for the job.“Our partnership has been good throughout the competition and since I’ve taken over,” said Brook, who was named England’s white-ball captain last April.“We get on very well and the communication has been outstanding.Long may it continue.

“I’ve said plenty of times he’s the best coach I’ve ever had.The way he speaks to everybody, he’s got an aura in the dressing room.Everybody looks up to him, the things he did in the game as a player were unbelievable and he’s just carried that into his coaching. The things he’s done over the four years since he took over have changed English cricket for the best. He’s the best head coach I’ve ever had.

”If there is no doubt that England underperformed in Australia, McCullum said the same accusation could not be made of the white-ball side after their run to the World Cup’s last four ended with defeat in Mumbai.“In the end we came within seven runs of beating a very good India team in their conditions, in arguably the most hostile stadium in the world,” he said.“It’s a fine achievement. It’s obviously disappointing we’re not getting a crack at a World Cup final, but there’s a lot to be proud of.“I’m enjoying the role, I’m enjoying it across all formats and I’d love to carry that on.

I feel like we’ve made some significant improvements across the various formats,Yes, we’ve missed some opportunities, but I think this team has a real opportunity over the coming years to improve and hopefully finish what we’ve started,I’d love to be a part of that,”Brook praised Jacob Bethell, who scored a superb century as England fell agonisingly close to overhauling India’s massive total of 253, as “a phenomenal player” who is “going to have a hell of a career”,But he admitted England had been incapable of overcoming the depth of India’s batting resources, or their in-built advantage as hosts.

“I’m extremely proud of the way the boys stuck to their guns. They’ve done everything me and Baz have asked of them,” he said.“We should be extremely proud of the way we almost chased down 250 on their home turf, with them knowing all the best plans throughout the competition. They just have batsmen coming out of everywhere. They’re extremely good players, clean ball strikers.

If you miss you’re going for six or four,Unfortunately, we didn’t execute as well as we could have done tonight and that’s cost us,”

Sam Altman admits OpenAI can’t control Pentagon’s use of AI

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, told employees on Tuesday that his company does not control how the Pentagon uses their artificial intelligence products in military operations. Altman’s claims on OpenAI’s lack of input come amid increased scrutiny of how the military uses AI in war and ethics concerns from AI workers over how their technology will be deployed. “You do not get to make operational decisions,” Altman told employees, according to reports by Bloomberg and CNBC.“So maybe you think the Iran strike was good and the Venezuela invasion was bad. You don’t get to weigh in on that,” Altman reportedly said

Elon Musk takes witness stand in trial over Twitter takeover

Elon Musk took the stand on Wednesday in a trial brought by Twitter investors, who allege the billionaire committed securities fraud as he was buying the social media company in 2022. The class-action lawsuit alleges Musk agreed to buy Twitter but then waffled for months, attacking the company with the goal of bringing down the stock price to get a better bargain. After contentious legal wrangling, Musk did eventually buy Twitter for $54.20 a share, his original offer, totalling around $44bn. Musk testified on Wednesday that he didn’t realize his attacks on the company, mostly done via tweet on Twitter itself, would lower the company’s stock price or hurt its investors

Joy of teaching English in the age of AI | Letter

Your long read (Teacher v chatbot: my journey into the classroom in the age of AI, 3 March) provides human insight into both the craft and purpose of English teaching in the era of developing AI expertise in language. There is no doubt that if the article were fed into AI models often enough, the teacher’s words and techniques could, at some level, be replicated by AI online teachers. However, reading and writing, especially that which explores the writer’s thoughts and feelings, are surely uniquely human activities. As the writer comes to recognise, exploring human experiences through the written word is a highly valuable communal experience. Reading literature aloud in the classroom is the gateway to discussing personal responses to the author’s words

Union tries to seize control of works council at Tesla’s German factory

Europe’s largest trade union is trying to gain control of the works council at Elon Musk’s Tesla gigafactory near Berlin, in an industrial relations showdown marked by lawsuits and mutual accusations of slander. The works council, an elected body of employees that negotiates everything from working hours to pay deals with a company’s management, is considered an entrenched aspect of the German corporate world, particularly in the car industry. But it was a bone of contention at the Tesla plant in Grünheide, about 20 miles (30km) south-east of Berlin, even before the gates opened almost four years ago. There have been regular clashes at the plant – which employs about 10,000 workers and is the US electric carmaker’s only production site in Europe – between the turbo-capitalist approach of Tesla’s management and Germany’s tradition of a social market economy, which relies on worker representation and collective bargaining.Voting in elections to the works council, which is now controlled by non-trade union members, began on Monday and will close on Wednesday

Europe’s next-generation fighter jet project may collapse if row continues, says warplane maker

France and Germany’s next-generation fighter jet project could soon be “dead”, one of the two companies tasked with delivering it has warned, amid a worsening corporate rift over who gets to build the aircraft.Dassault Aviation, France’s leading warplane maker, said Airbus’s defence arm – which represents Germany and Spain – needed to cooperate on the €100bn programme otherwise it would collapse.“Airbus doesn’t want to work with Dassault, full stop. I take note. I never said I didn’t want to work with Airbus or with the Germans,” said Éric Trappier, Dassault’s chief executive, via an interpreter while presenting the company’s financial results on Wednesday
