Olivia De Zilva: the 10 funniest things I have ever seen (on the internet)

As a perpetually lonely child in the planned suburbs of Adelaide, I grew up on the internet. The first memory I have of accessing YouTube was waiting three days for my dial-up internet to load Vanessa Hudgen’s music video for Come Back to Me.It cost my parents a lot of money, but I couldn’t resist the pull of funny cat videos, Sims 2 music videos and early era TMZ.Before I learned how to read novels, I read trash magazines back to front.I didn’t know what a verb was but I could detail a blind item from back to front.

As a child, I was diagnosed with selective mutism and the only way I could communicate was through re-enacting celebrity drama I saw on the internet or television.I probably needed a therapist, but in the end it all kind of worked out?As a writer, celebrity drama and gossip is what gave me a voice, and my somewhat real, somewhat fictional novel, Plastic Budgie, is a love letter to all of the popular culture that made me laugh, warped my brain and annoyed the people around me.Some people would say that mentioning celebrities and reality TV in your work makes it lowbrow, but I disagree.I think it provides a unique intertextuality that can draw a reader into a familiar and engaging world. When the Wendy Williams Show YouTube channel was taken down, it was worse than the burning of the Library of Alexandria.

This clip, according to Wikipedia, has been used in more than 100,000 TikTok videos because of how iconic it is.I would say that this moment is the closest Wendy’s ever come to dropping her Truman Show act.The genuine fear in her eyes when she spots the zombie in the crowd, her calling for the omnipotent “James” – this was the first moment where we saw Wendy really out of character. In these eight seconds, you see so many emotions: fear, anxiety, stress, shame, confusion.Ask me the Lord’s Prayer and I couldn’t recite a single word.

Ask me to recite this video and I’d go straight to heaven.‘WAR OF THE WORLDS’, starring Ice Cube, debuts at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes “The film’s tagline ‘It’s worse than you think’ sums up the entire movie” pic.twitter.com/6Avi3IOk5TI actually related a lot to this movie, because I also find that using Microsoft Teams can lead to world devastation and destruction. In his 1938 radio adaptation of War of the Worlds, Orson Welles used radio and the news to frighten people into thinking there was an alien invasion.

In this iteration, Ice Cube uses Teams to invoke an immediate trauma response in all white-collar workers around the globe – and not just because of the aliens,Honestly, I love how this movie’s whole budget was basically used on Getty Images and stock footage, which could only be recouped from egregious amounts of product placement from Amazon,It was basically a long gif with random things happening and I’m not complaining,A them = Academy Award winner George Clooney,A who = Bindi Irwin’s influencer cousin.

Who? Weekly got me through Covid, copious amounts of depression and hours of looking at spreadsheets,Ranking and discussing D-list celebrities is actually an art form,Who? Weekly has kept me informed on so many world issues, such as Katy Perry’s failed space shuttle mission, who Ana de Armas is dating and what Rita Ora is up to,The fringes of Hollywood are far more entertaining than the bright lights,to be on this earth at the same time as club chalamet … a blessing!!! pic.

twitter.com/Dkw2ZLLsz2Club Chalamet has been an integral part of Stan X for years now.Her subtweets about Timmy’s squeezes, the ride-or-die mentality when watching the Wonka movie and continuing to tweet about his Oscar campaign after her house burned down is really something to marvel at.I have never put this much effort into anything – not even my own career – so to see Club have this level of devotion and loyalty to someone she doesn’t know is really quite something.Thinking about the person who runs the Natalie Portman updates account and if they’re ok pic.

twitter.com/NcrsCogSQLGod truly gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers.I love how @natalieportmanupdates continued to post through all of the pain – truly an icon.I wish I could end every email with, “I feel like shit #natalieportman”.We've come a LONG way @jonathancheban !Happy birthday May we laugh until we cry for the rest of our lives,Love you! pic.

twitter,com/HxN7YMr66YPeople laud shows like Succession and the Sopranos for their complex takes on family dynamics and patriarchy,When I say Kourtney and Kim Take Miami season 3 has the same implications, I get scoffed at,I have a strong feeling that this is where television writers go to get their Emmy-winning material,I love the absurdity (Kim taking her cat to the club), the twists and turns (Scott becoming an alligator farmer) and Kim’s face when Kourtney loses her temper at Jonathan Cheban, AKA The Food God, for speaking on family business.

The Kardashians are so subdued now and I really do miss this era of messiness and unadulterated drama. If I could relive anything, it would be to watch Kourtney and Kim Take Miami season 3 for the first time again. This article includes content provided by TikTok.We ask for your permission before anything is loaded, as they may be using cookies and other technologies. To view this content, click 'Allow and continue'.

Project Runway has blessed the world with some of the nastiest reads on television,“Not even to dinner with the Kushners?” should be put in the Oxford Dictionary as one of the most famous phrases of all time,The drag! The snark! The head tilt! The gasping! When I first heard this phrase, I knew straight away that it would be in my head until I die,The now-deleted “Stefani Germanotta You Will Never Be Famous” Facebook group is a metaphor for never giving up on your dreams,Although people were hating on Stefani (AKA Lady Gaga) like it was a professional sport, she still rose above it and became a triple threat in singing, dancing and acting.

Is anyone in that Facebook group now a Tony away from becoming an Egot? I don’t think so.I’ve included Wendy twice on this list because I honestly miss her so much.I love how she talked about “The Killer” – a catch-all term she frequently used – as if she meant one guy.How did he come to be? Why is Wendy so afraid? What does she know that we don’t? The Killer even has a listing on Villains Wiki, as a “mysterious entity” whose sole purpose is to haunt Wendy Williams.I hate how the Pussycat Dolls were always positioned as “Nicole and the girls.

” There were so many talents in that group, especially Melody who the internet claimed was locked in a cupboard at the AMAs so Nicole could sing the hook of Buttons instead of her.I love how Melody (allegedly) broke free, entered from the wings and took centre stage. The shady camera man was working overtime here. But again, this is why you don’t ever give up on your dreams.Olivia De Zilva is a writer based in Adelaide.

McKinley Hunt’s double for Canada pushes Wales to brink of World Cup exit

Canada emphatically booked their place in the knockout stages of the Rugby World Cup and inflicted a second successive defeat on Wales after another disappointing afternoon.Kévin Rouet’s Canada have lived up to the billing inside the opening fortnight with back-to-back victories that have been both impressive and eye-catching. They were far superior to the Welsh here, scoring six tries without reply to set up a showdown with Scotland next weekend, when victory in Exeter will confirm them as Pool B winners. On back-to-back weekends in Salford, Wales have flattered to deceive. However, while this was a disappointment against a very strong Canada side, the damage was done on the opening weekend against Scotland

Women’s Rugby World Cup needs jeopardy to stay in Monday morning conversations | Andy Bull

After all these years of asking for more, it’s churlish to complain when the Women’s Rugby World Cup delivered so much in one weekend. England’s victory pulled in two-and-half million prime time viewers on the BBC, 85,000 fans turned out across the four grounds, including a record-breaking 42,000 crowd in Sunderland, five hat-tricks, four packed fan zones, free concerts, and all those fireworks. It had almost everything anyone could have wanted. Almost. The one thing missing was a tight finish

County cricket’s restructure: what is being proposed and how will it work?

It feels symptomatic of English cricket’s dysfunctional nature that, having started the summer with five different options for a restructured County Championship, the 18 first-class chairs will conclude a tortuous process next week with a sixth on the table. International peace treaties have been negotiated quicker than talks over whether, and how, to cut a handful of playing days from a domestic calendar that, with four different competitions and formats to accommodate, is bursting at the seams. The tongue-in-cheek words of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s managing director of the professional game, Rob Andrew, when announcing the review in April have proved prophetic. “We have 18 counties that agree it’s not right, but 19 different versions of what the answer is,” he said.Unlike the previous attempt to remodel the English summer three years ago that was commissioned by the ECB and led by Andrew Strauss, the current review has been undertaken by the counties themselves under the aegis of the Professional Game Committee [PGC], chaired by Warwickshire’s Mark McCafferty

Novak Djokovic fights past Cameron Norrie to become oldest man to reach US Open fourth round since 1991

At a time when Novak Djokovic could really benefit from some straightforward wins to ease through the early rounds of his final grand slam tournament of the year, nothing has come easily in New York. But under the bright lights on Friday night, Djokovic held off an impressive Cameron Norrie to reach the fourth round of the US Open with a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-3 win in his best performance of the tournament so far.The victory makes Djokovic, 38, the oldest man to reach the last 16 of the US Open in 34 years – since Jimmy Connors in 1991. He also ties Roger Federer for the most grand slam fourth round appearances in history with 69 appearances. “These kind of matches and performances always give me hope that I can go far, challenge the best players in the world,” Djokovic said

‘It’s bigger than me’: Taylor Townsend topples No 5 Andreeva in US Open shock

Taylor Townsend capped a whirlwind 48 hours at the US Open with one of the finest performances of her career, upsetting No 5 seed Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-2 under the lights on Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the fourth round in New York for the first time since 2019 and equal her best performance at any major. The 29-year-old American, ranked outside the top 100 in singles but world No 1 in doubles, steadied herself after a nervy start and won four of five games to take the opening set. She then took complete control after getting broken early in the second, continuing to rush the net and ride the energy of a raucous crowd to win the last six games on the trot and close out a straight-sets win in 76 minutes. It was third career win over of a top-10 opponent, along with victories over Simona Halep here in 2019 and Jessica Pegula in Rome last year.A former world No 1 junior from Georgia who reinvented herself as a doubles star, she won 21 of 29 points when she came forward and struck nearly four times as many winners (23) as Andreeva (six)

Women’s Super League 2025-26 previews No 6: Leicester

Guardian writers’ predicted position: 12th (NB: this is not necessarily Sophie Downey’s prediction but the average of our writers’ tips)Last season’s position: 10thLeicester’s rather muted pre-season got turned upside down with the announcement that the club had parted ways with the manager Amandine Miquel 11 days before the start of their campaign. On the face of it, the decision appears to be harsh on a manager who will feel she was building something after a rollercoaster of a first year. As injury after injury rolled in during the first four months of last season, Miquel cut an increasingly baffled figure at her side’s constant run of bad fortune and her lack of centre-forward options. Jutta Rantala, Lena Petermann and Noémie Mouchon sustained season-ending injuries; Shana Chossenotte was troubled by recurrent injury issues; and Deanne Rose and Hannah Cain continued their recovery from long-term problems. The defensive midfielder Saori Takarada and Ruby Mace were among those given a try-out in the No 9 role as Miquel tried to find a solution
