Rory McIlroy returns to scene of Masters glory with ‘big weight off my shoulders’

On the Tuesday of last year’s Masters, Rory McIlroy dined with Justin Rose in the clubhouse at Augusta. He arrived right around the time that all the guests at Scottie Scheffler’s champions dinner were having cocktails on the balcony.“I was pulling up Magnolia Lane,” McIlroy says.“And I’m like, well, do I go and park way over at the parking lot? Because I’m not going to park in the champions parking lot.’”Not when there’s Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and everyone else looking down.

“I didn’t want to get out and use a valet because they were going to see me and it was going to be weird. So I had this really awkward moment,” McIlroy says with a laugh.“Thankfully that was the last time that I needed to do that.”Five days later, he came into the media centre for his victory press conference.“I’d like to start with a question myself,” McIlroy said then.

“What are we all going to talk about next year?” The answer, it turned out, was his mum and dad and everything he owes them, his daughter, his caddie, the menu for his own champions dinner this Tuesday evening, the flowers around the grounds, shoes, ships, sealing wax, cabbages and kings, everything but the one thing he’s had to talk about here every year since he blew a four-shot lead in the final round back in 2011.“For the past 17 years I just could not wait for the tournament to start,” McIlroy says.“And this year I wouldn’t care if it never did.” Which, he adds quickly, doesn’t mean that he feels “any less motivated to go out there and play well and try to win the tournament”, only that “he’s a lot more relaxed about it.It is so nice to walk around the property or be out on the golf course and, yeah, just not have that hanging over me, like it feels that it’s a big weight off my shoulders.

” No one’s asking him when he’s going to get it done any more.Instead, everyone’s telling him he can win it back-to-back.“It’s nice, there’s a real positive connotation to it.”McIlroy says that the “what if?” has become a “what now?” “I think the story as it relates to me is ‘what do I do from now onwards?’” he says.“What motivates me? What gets me going? What do I still want to achieve in the game? I think that’s the story.

And there’s still a lot that I want to do.You think every time you achieve something or have success that you’ll be happy but then the goalposts move and they just keep nudging a little bit further and further out of reach.I felt like the career grand slam was my destination, and I got there, and then I realised it wasn’t the destination.”US unless stated, all times BST:(a) denotes amateurs12:40 Johnny Keefer, Haotong Li (Chn)12:50 Max Homa, Naoyuki Kataoka (Jpn), Carlos Ortiz (Mex)13:02 Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen (Den), José María Olazábal (Sp), AldrichPotgieter (SA)13:14 Ángel Cabrera (Arg), (a) Jackson Herrington, Sami Välimäki (Fin)13:26 Ryan Fox (NZ), Max Greyserman, Charl Schwartzel (SA)13:38 Rasmus Hoejgaard (Den), Matt McCarty, Vijay Singh (Fij)13:50 Casey Jarvis (SA), Kurt Kitayama, Kristoffer Reitan (Nor)14:02 Nicolas Echavarría (Col), (a) Brandon Holtz, Bubba Watson14:19 Sam Burns, Jake Knapp, Cameron Smith (Aus)14:31 Keegan Bradley, Ryan Gerard, Nick Taylor (Can)14:43 Jason Day (Aus), Dustin Johnson, Shane Lowry (Ire)14:55 Akshay Bhatia, Tommy Fleetwood (Eng), Patrick Reed15:07 Bryson DeChambeau, Matthew Fitzpatrick (Eng), Xander Schauffele15:19 Russell Henley, Hideki Matsuyama (Jpn), Collin Morikawa15:31 (a) Mason Howell, Rory McIlroy (NI), Cameron Young15:43 Patrick Cantlay, Viktor Hovland (Nor), Alexander Norén (Swe)16:03 Sung-Jae Im (Kor), Sam Stevens16:15 Brian Campbell, Tom McKibbin (NI), Andrew Novak16:27 Wyndham Clark, (a) Mateo Pulcini (Arg), Mike Weir (Can)16:39 Nicolai Højgaard (Den), Zach Johnson, Michael Kim16:51 (a) Ethan Fang, Davis Riley, Danny Willett (Eng)17:03 Daniel Berger, Brian Harman, Adam Scott (Aus)17:15 Fred Couples, (a) Pongsapak Laopakdee (Tha), Min Woo Lee (Aus)17:27 Jacob Bridgeman, Sergio García (Sp), Aaron Rai (Eng)17:44 Michael Brennan, Corey Conners (Can), Harry Hall (Eng)17:56 Tyrrell Hatton (Eng), Maverick McNealy, JJ Spaun18:08 Ludvig Åberg (Swe), Chris Gotterup, Jon Rahm (Sp)18:20 Brooks Koepka, Justin Rose (Eng), Jordan Spieth18:32 Ben Griffin, Sepp Straka (Aut), Justin Thomas18:44 Robert MacIntyre (Sco), Scottie Scheffler, Gary Woodland18:56 Harris English, Si-Woo Kim (Kor), Marco Penge (Eng) PA MediaMcIlroy is 36 and he figures he has “another 10 good shots” at winning the tournament. He likes his chances here even better than he does in any of the three other majors.

“When you’ve had the experiences that I’ve had around here, good and bad, I think that can stand to you.I feel like I’m still young, but I’m very experienced.I’ve been doing this for a long time. This is my 18th start and I just think that everything here is a little more predictable.“You know the golf course, there’s subtle changes year after year, but the hole locations are always in similar spots – the more experience you have around this golf course, the better it is.

”Nobody knows how it will play out.Only three men, Woods, Nicklaus, and Nick Faldo, have ever won the tournament twice in succession. It’s more common for the defending champion to struggle because of all the distractions of the new duties.Either way, after waiting all these years, McIlroy is determined to make the most of it all.He is looking forward to the dinner and says he had put a lot of thought into the speech he will have to give, enjoyed turning up to support the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, and the Drive, Chip & Putt youth tournament.

Most of all, he relished the chance to play the course with his father last Sunday.“Every time I get to play golf with my dad, it’s a blessing,” McIlroy says.“We were able to win the Seminole Pro-Member this year, which is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.Hopefully that’s the most pressure I feel this year because he was riding me pretty hard the last few holes. But it was just an amazing experience to be out there the Sunday before the Masters together, to enjoy it and soak it all in, and I guess just to reminisce on the journey that we’ve been on.

It’s a long way from Holywood, Northern Ireland.”

‘We’ll start a creche’: how the World Surf League is becoming family friendly for parents on tour | Kieran Pender

The tour brings in maternity wildcard and parental leave, with surfers saying it is a ‘huge step in the right direction’ and ‘so sick’ for the sportThis year’s Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach has felt different for Connor O’Leary. After almost a decade on tour, this is the Australian Japanese surfer’s first World Surf League campaign with a baby in tow. Romii-Sakura O’Leary, who will celebrate her first birthday this month, is one of a growing number of children hanging out in the competitor’s area.“I was watching her crawling around the competition site yesterday,” O’Leary says midway through the Pro, the opening event of the 2026 WSL calendar. “Seeing her crawling around, playing with Kelly [Slater], Steph [Gilmore] was grabbing her, it makes you appreciate the life that we live

Sale believe Courtney Lawes can regain England place after veteran signs one-year deal

Courtney Lawes has been backed to regain his England place following confirmation he will be joining Sale Sharks this summer on a one-year deal. The former national captain has spent the last two seasons with Brive in France’s Pro D2 but has indicated he would love to play international rugby again should the chance arise. While Lawes will be 38 next February and retired from the Test arena after the 2023 World Cup in France, he still feels he can make an impact at the top level of the game. That view is shared by Sale’s director of rugby, Alex Sanderson, who is looking forward to welcoming the former Northampton stalwart to Manchester.“I don’t think we’d have signed him if he was just a player who wanted a paycheck,” said Sanderson

Drone racing to drone strikes: have war and sport become indistinguishable?

The Trump administration’s pushing of the war in Iran reflects a sporting culture driven by clipped-up content, shameless tribalism and a lust for escalation Among the more surprising continuities of 2026 has been the visual kinship between the Winter Olympics and the US’s illegal and unprovoked war in Iran. High-speed camera drones were a highlight of TV coverage of the recent Games in Milano Cortina, bringing viewers within kissing distance of the action as Olympic athletes hurtled down the slopes and around the tracks in the skiing and sliding events. The incessant screech of the drones aside, the introduction of quadcopter-borne cameras felt like a real step forward in coverage of the winter sports, bringing a (literal) new perspective to events that had become, over recent decades, fairly static as a viewing experience. No sooner had the Olympics finished than aerial video was back on our screens – only the footage, in this case, was of a far darker variety. In place of the ludicrous hip flexibility of the slaloming skiers and the high-speed cornering of the monobobbers, for the past month our feeds have been flooded with satellite and drone imagery of the US military blowing Iranian aircraft, ships, vehicles, munitions buildings, and citizens to smithereens

The Breakdown | Mitchell’s Six Nations conundrum: who will be Red Roses’ next Abby Dow?

How do you solve a problem like replacing Abby Dow? Yes, it is a different take on the Sound of Music song but it is a fiendish question to answer. The Red Roses winger retired after the Rugby World Cup, leaving a try-scoring hole in the world champions’ squad, whose next task is to try to win their eighth straight Women’s Six Nations title. And so while Julie Andrews’ character realised she was not a problem after all, the England head coach, John Mitchell, is left with a selection headache before his team start their campaign against Ireland on Saturday.Dow scored 50 tries in 59 caps, with her lightning pace a key characteristic to her game. She retired to pursue a career in engineering and her boots are large ones to fill

The Masters is a welcome oasis in golf’s fractious world, despite its stuffy foibles | Ewan Murray

It is easy to poke fun at the prissy traditions of the Masters. Golfers, never mind spectators, enter a state of panic over what horrible fate may befall them should they break the rules inside Augusta National. It is preposterous in so many ways; adults consumed by fear over missteps at a golf tournament. People do not typically feel this way inside the Sistine Chapel. This year, there are reasons to be grateful for Augusta’s unapologetic approach
