Price of consumer goods could surge as shipping costs soar, industry body says

The price of consumer goods including computers, electrical machinery and transport equipment could surge this year as a result of soaring shipping costs, an industry body has said, adding that “cracks [are] forming in the global trading system”.The cost of transport, energy and raw materials continues to rise and prices remain volatile, which could feed through to businesses and consumers during 2026, according to a study by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS).Concerns about disruption to supply chains during the next three months reached the highest level in two years, suggesting growing worries among procurement teams. The concerns were reported in a survey conducted in late 2025 by CIPS, an international trade body that represents 64,000 member organisations in procurement and supply chains across 180 countries.Bosses responsible for procurement said they were often the first within companies to notice rising prices or problems getting hold of goods.

They said uncertainty and price volatility risked becoming a permanent feature of international trade rather than a temporary disruption, as the turmoil unleashed by the pandemic has been followed by geopolitical tensions around the world.Shipping and logistics is the area most likely to see significant price rises in 2026, according to the procurement bosses surveyed, with 22% of respondents reporting cost increases of more than 10% by the end of 2025.Nearly a fifth (18%) said they had seen similar price increases for computers and peripheral equipment, while 15% reported cost rises for transport equipment and 14% for electrical machinery and apparatus. These price rises and continued volatility are fuelling expectations of more inflationary pressure for consumers during 2026.Shoppers had already seen increases for some computers late last year, with Lenovo and Dell reportedly hiking prices by about 15%.

In December, the price of some Dell laptops rose between $130 (£95) and $765, depending on the model and memory size, Business Insider reported,The average spot shipping rate between Asia and the US west coast jumped by nearly 30% between late December and early January,The rate increased from $2,145 for a 40ft (12-metre) equivalent unit (FEU), a standard shipping container, to $2,757, according to the Freightos Baltic Index,Prices on shipping routes between Asia and the US east coast and Europe have also climbed in recent weeks,Ben Farrell, the chief executive of CIPS, said: “Procurement professionals are often the first to see cracks forming in the global trading system.

”He added: “Volatility is no longer an exception. When logistics costs can swing by 20%-30% in weeks, those pressures inevitably ripple through to businesses and consumers alike.”International freight shipping costs were already on the rise and climbed further after increased tensions, stoked by Donald Trump’s recent threats to take over Greenland and impose further tariffs on European allies as well as the possibility of war between the US and Iran, sending investors fleeing to traditional safe haven assets such as gold and the Swiss franc.US tariffs and protectionist policies were highlighted as important causes of price volatility by those surveyed, who said they were directly being affected by shifting trade rules and China-US tensions.

From Nouvelle Vague to Mock the Week: your complete entertainment guide to the week ahead

Nouvelle VagueOut now Never bet against Richard Linklater: the veteran director (Dazed and Confused, Boyhood) loves turning his hand to different genres, and his latest is a typically mellow dramatisation of the period in French film history that saw the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut and Claude Chabrol shake off their lives as critics and become bona fide film legends. Is This Thing On?Out nowIt sounds like an improbable standup bit in itself, but no: here we have a Hollywood comedy inspired by the life of the UK’s own John Bishop. Will Arnett plays the man in a troubled marriage who decides to give open mic a go and is a surprise hit, while Laura Dern plays his wife. Directed by Bradley Cooper (yes, the Bradley Cooper).PrimateOut nowCome on now, people: chimpanzees are unsuitable enough as pets to start with

Catherine O’Hara managed to make difficult characters utterly delightful

One of the later and less beloved Christopher Guest comedies featuring his troupe of peerless, often SCTV-related improvisers is For Your Consideration, a medium-funny savaging of Hollywood’s feverish awards-season prestige campaigning. The film’s unquestionable highlight is Catherine O’Hara, playing an actor who gets a whisper of awards buzz for a schlocky, still-filming drama called Home for Purim, and slowly loses her mind with the knowledge that she could maybe, possibly be recognized by her peers. O’Hara, known for her distinctively brassy yet malleable trill of her voice and her frequently red hair, peels back her performer’s bravado to expose the frenzied need beneath it. She somehow plays the outsized beneath the regular-sized, as her Marilyn Hack goes from plugging-away workhorse to desperate striver. Unsurprisingly, O’Hara briefly generated awards buzz of her own for playing this part; even less surprisingly, an Oscar nomination was not forthcoming

Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù: ’If the west doesn’t say a film is good, that doesn’t mean it’s no good’

When Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù becomes animated during conversation, his speaking voice – ordinarily a sort of polished inner-city London dialect – dances into a smooth Nigerian accent. As it happens, his shoulders ease, his eyes smile, he is totally relaxed. If it is true that we become the most distilled versions of ourselves when we are at our most comfortable, then it is clear here that the very essence of Dìrísù’s personhood is a Nigerian man.The opportunity to nurture his Nigerian identity was a significant factor in Dìrísù’s decision to take on his latest film, the Bafta-nominated My Father’s Shadow. The entire project – on which he serves both as lead actor and executive producer – was shot on location in Lagos, the country’s former capital city, over an eight-week period in early 2024

‘Begging my boyfriend to get one’: Paul Mescal inspires yet another fashion craze with Hamnet earring

While Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet has been nominated for eight Academy Awards including best picture, for many it is a tiny silver hoop earring worn by Paul Mescal in his portrayal of William Shakespeare that steals the show. Worn in his left ear lobe, the barely there hoop has people fixated online.“Begging my boyfriend to get a tiny hoop earring too,” reads one post dedicated to the accessory. “I cried for over half of Hamnet, but Paul Mescal’s slutty little earring made me feel conflicted,” reads another.Mescal previously sent viewers of Normal People into a frenzy over Connell’s chain, a thin silver “Argos chic” necklace, and shortly after thrust short shorts into the mainstream
