Jaguar Land Rover staff told to stay home after cyber-attack
Jaguar Land Rover has told its factory staff to stay home until at least next Tuesday as it continues to deal with the effects of a cyber-attack.The carmaker has had to stop production at its factories in Merseyside and the West Midlands after hackers infiltrated its systems.Production workers in Halewood on Merseyside and Solihull in the West Midlands and at JLR’s engine manufacturing site in Wolverhampton have been told to stay away until 9 September, in a tacit admission that a swift resolution to the problem is unlikely.The UK’s biggest car manufacturer, owned by India’s Tata group, halted production at the sites after discovering the breach on Sunday.It has since said its global operations had been “severely disrupted” by the cyber incident.
While there was no evidence that any customer data had been taken, JLR said it had decided to shut down its systems to mitigate the impact of the hack.The cyber-attack, which follows a spate of similar attacks across the UK retail sector, could take considerable time to resolve, given the experience this year of companies such as Marks & Spencer, the Co-op and Harrods.It is another blow for JLR, which was already struggling with the impact of US tariffs on the sector and weak consumer confidence.The hack has disrupted sales, with thousands of customers awaiting new vehicles, at one of the busiest times of the year for the market.September is one of the two months when new registration plates are released in the UK.

The carmaker, which has its headquarters in Coventry, employs 32,800 people in the UK.

Lazzat, the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes winner at Royal Ascot in June, is a clear favourite for the Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday, but Jerome Reynier’s gelding did not run to the same level when favourite for the Prix Maurice du Gheest last time out and faces a couple of lightly raced, three-year-old fillies, Time For Sandals and Sky Majesty, in his attempt to recapture Group One-winning form.Both fillies have just seven runs in the book, including the Group One Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June when Time For Sandals, a cosy winner, was nearly six lengths in front of Sky Majesty.Sky Majesty improved from Ascot to win a Listed contest and then a Group Three in Ireland on her next two starts, while Time For Sandals was beaten next time up, when dropping back to five furlongs in the King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.She struggled for running room a furlong out there, however, and the return to six furlongs on Saturday is very much in her favour too. Breakaway R360 league launch dealt blow after World Rugby application withdrawn
Rugby union’s proposed R360 breakaway league has deferred its application for sanctioning by World Rugby until at least next June in a setback for plans to launch next year.An application for official approval that was due to be discussed by the World Rugby Council on 23 September has been withdrawn, raising questions over whether the rebel league will be able to launch next September.Under World Rugby regulations all cross-border competitions must apply to the governing body for sanctioning and satisfy legal requirements regarding player welfare, medical provision, respecting the existing calendar, particularly contractually agreed international windows, as well as providing reassurances over anti-doping compliance.The next opportunity for R360 to make a sanctioning application is June next year, so a delay seems inevitable.
